Abstract:
The aim of the study is to analyze the environmental stability parameters of six-row and two-row spring barley samples of different maturity groups based on physical and chemical grain parameters. The objects of the study were 5 mid-early, 8 mid-season two-row barley samples, and 5 multi-row mid-early barley samples. The plants were grown in 2016–2018 in the forest-steppe zone of the Krasnoyarsk Region. The following parameters were determined: thousand-kernel weight, natural weight, protein content, and β-glucan content. Five parameters of environmental stability of the samples were calculated: the level and stability indicator of the variety PUSS, the stability factor SF, the homeostatic parameter Hom, the selection value indicator of the variety Cs, and the comprehensive quality indicator of the variety KPK. It was found that two-row barley samples, compared with six-row ones, were characterized by significantly higher values of the physical and chemical grain parameters. Most stability parameters for six-row barley samples, including grain weight, protein content, and β-glucan content, were higher than those for two-row barley. A trend toward increased stability for mid-season barley samples, based on grain protein and β-glucan content, was observed compared to those for mid-early samples. For most statistical stability parameters, six-row barley samples, unlike two-row barley samples, demonstrated a positive correlation between the average grain unit weight and protein content, on the one hand, and the level of stability for these traits, on the other. In the Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe, mid-season forms of the two-row subspecies are promising for spring barley breeding. They possess, firstly, higher absolute values of the main physicochemical grain characteristics compared to six-row barley, and, secondly, show a tendency toward increasing stability in terms of grain unit weight, protein content, and β-glucans compared to mid-early two-row barley.
